Flower of the Month

February/Viola

Last month pansies were in the spotlight, but for the month of February, we will be highlighting violas!

Often the names pansy and viola are used interchangeably. However, all pansies are violas, but not all violas are pansies!  Make no mistake about it, the violas are growing in our greenhouses and thriving right along with the pansies!

As with the pansies, violas are cool weather flowers that produce bright, bold blooms! They should usually be planted in mid March to April in New Jersey and they will bloom throughout the spring and into the summer. Violas can tolerate full sun, but not the heat of a hot summer afternoon. As the temperatures rise, violas would prefer a shady spot in the afternoon. Ideal temperatures are between 40-70 degrees.

There are over 500 varieties of violas, so selecting the color you prefer may be challenging! Once you are ready to plant, choose a pot or garden bed that has soil rich in organic matter. A peat based potting soil is a good choice for patio pots. Garden soil that incorporates mulch, composted leaves, or other fertilizer is also ideal.  Violas prefer moist soil and may need additional watering if they are in the direct summer sun during the afternoon hours.

To maximize the performance of the viola, deadhead the plants as the blooms fade. If the plants become leggy, cut them back to 3-4" tall to rejuvenate them. Although they are known as cool season bloomers, with a minimal amount of attention it is possible for violas to continue to produce stunning blooms throughout the summer months.

Violas are striking when planted alone in a container or as a garden border, but they can easily be mixed with ornamental winter vegetables, primrose, trailing lobelia, or sweet alyssum.

Flower of the Month

Pansy/January

January days may be cold and grey here in South Jersey, but the pansies are growing beautifully in our greenhouses!

Pansies are a classic cool weather flower that burst with color when they are in bloom! They are a welcome addition to early spring gardens and patio pots. In New Jersey, mid March is usually the best time to plant pansies. They like rich, well drained soil that is evenly moist, but not soggy. Pansies thrive in full morning sun with afternoon shade. As far as the outdoor temperatures, pansies prefer night temperatures in the 40s and day temperatures in the 60s. They are cold hardy, but the show of blooms will likely be affected if the temperature dips into the 20s.

There are many ways to plant pansies in an eye appealing display. They look lovely on their own as a monochromatic pot or garden bed. If you choose to plant your pansies in a mixed pot, the combinations are endless! Other cool weather plants compliment the pansies beautifully, such as violas, primroses, trailing lobelia, and sweet alyssum. An alternative is to plant pansies with winter vegetables such as kale, ornamental cabbage, Swiss chard and parsley. Add a contrasting color of pansy or violas for a huge pop of color!
